Concept for the Project

People who like this series of paintings often encourage us to collection them together as a coffee-table book. We think it's a great idea. What I envision is a high-quality art book where on one page is a painting, and on the facing page is a short essay (by me) about science or philosophy inspired by the painting, along with commentary from the painting's recipient and/or or other scientists (about the painting, about the science, about the essay, about anything apropos). To get this going, I thought it would be fun to collect the content for the book on the MPP wiki, editable by members of the MPP and invited guests. After all the essays and comments are complete, they'll be edited, pruned, polished, and formatted for publication. Below are links with one wiki page per painting... eventually, they will all be here, in the order I would like them in the book.

The Paintings

Almost Real

Painting: Almost Real
Mathematical abstractions never look like the real thing, but they are often as powerful, and frequently more illuminating.

Adventures in Mechanical Thinking

Painting: Adventures in Mechanical Thinking
Machines can learn now, at least a little. They will become smarter, and eventually will discover and perceive the world in their own way.
